Frequently asked questions
Can I have counselling on line?
Yes; Talkwise uses skype and you can also choose telephone therapy if you prefer.
What happens at our first session?
If your session is in person, you will have a few forms to fill in which we can check through together. Your process will then begin: through open questioning you can choose what you want to talk about in a non-judgmental and confidential environment. If you are talking online you will have been sent an online form to complete which your therapist will have looked at in advance.
Can I have a chat before booking my first session to ask questions about your service?
Yes, we offer a free half an hour session either online or via telephone; you can ask questions and you and your therapist can get a feel for whether or not you will work well together.
what is Gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is a 'humanistic' therapy, which means that sessions are led by your own thoughts and feelings. Gestalt practice sees a client's process holistically. Subjects/issues can be looked at as a cycle or circle, addressing and exploring ways to reach satisfaction or completion of each cycle.
What is CBT?
CBT (cognitive behavioural Therapy) is a talking therapy which combines a cognitive approach (your thoughts) with a behavioural approach (the things you do). It can be a practical and effective way for you to manage your process in between sessions, developing your belief in your own abilities and self-worth. (See 'CBT-E' in the next section*)
What is mindful/compassionate eating?
*Mindful/compassionate eating is a way of eating, planning your food, and viewing your own self-worth in an open and nourishing lifestyle.
Will you weigh me?
Probably not, unless you want us to. If you do want some way of monitoring any changes in your body another option is to measure your waist, hips and chest with a tape measure, but you don't have to be measured at all if you don't want to be. Some clients choose to be measured but ask not to be told what their weight or size is. Talkwise understands how difficult and painful it can be to be measured.
How many sessions do I need?
It is up to you how many sessions you have; the NHS for example suggest six sessions as a starting point, and many people continue for much longer. Within our sessions we can regularly check in with how you feel your sessions are going and if you feel ready to have longer gaps eg two weeks between appointments. Many clients like to have a long term plan of once a month sessions.
Will my sessions be confidential?

Yes, it is important for you to feel able to open up at your own pace, without fear of shame and judgment getting in the way. As long as your therapist/mentor believes you and people you are involved with are safe, you can trust that your sessions will remain confidential. (Please read the Talkwise contract for further information about ethical safety concerns).
What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?
You are required to give Talkwise at least 24 hours' notice of cancellation, otherwise full payment will be taken.
What if I can't make regular sessions/need to go on holiday?
As long as you have given at least 24 hours' notice of any changes, you can adapt your appointments to fit in with your lifestyle. It is advisable to stick to regular appointments at the start of your process as this will be beneficial to your development.
Will I have to 'go on a diet'?
Great question! It's up to you of course, but generally 'diets' are not prescribed. Together we will develop a structure for optimum nutrition alongside an open and shame-free mindset.
How much does it cost, and how do I pay?
Please see our plans/pricing page for further information on costs.
Can the counselling/mentor visit my home?
Yes, within a ten mile radius of the counsellor's office, and after joint discussion. This can be useful for both talking therapy and nutritional mentoring, and is usually seen as a one-off visit to assist in practical suggestions eg in your kitchen. Do talk to your therapist if you would like more than one session at home though, as there is often flexibility.
Do you work to an ethical framework?
Yes, we work to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy's ethical framework - clients need to be able to participate freely as they work with practitioners towards their desired goals.
Are you looking for more staff?
Yes, send us a CV and evidence of your professional qualifications, and we'll get back to you - thanks for your interest!
Do you offer professional training?
Yes, Talkwise will be offering a series of training sessions later in 2024 - please email us to let us know which topics you're interested in and we'll let you know when we have dates available: talkwiseinfo@gmail.com
